Ronald McDonald House

Exposed to the remarkable doctors, nurses, and volunteers when my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, I promised myself once the trauma was over I would become a volunteer and try to give a little back. I began volunteering at Ronald Mcdonald House Randwick and was named as their ambassadore in 2008. Working as a volunteer in the House has changed my life in the most positive way. The children and their families radiate determination, spunk and a sense of caring for each other rarely seen elsewhere. While some visits can be tough, the vast majority of my time spent in the house is an uplifting experience.

As the ambassadore I encourage you to donate time or money. Companies (of any size) and their employees are more than welcome to visit and provide dinner for the House on an occasional or regular basis. Ronald McDonald House Randwick was set up by a compassionate group of Volunteers in the community who recognized the need to provide accommodation at Sydney Children's Hospital for country and interstate families.  Built in 1991, the House began with 16 bedrooms and now after 17 years there are 21 bedrooms, 5 self contained units and an after-hours co-ordinator’s unit. Over 80 people are accommodated each night, some families stay one night, many stay for a week, months or years.

The Board of Management, the staff and Volunteers recognize the challenges faced by families who need to spend long periods of time away from home during their child’s treatment. The aim is to provide a calm, caring and supportive environment where the entire family can stay in support of the sick child.

The house provides a haven where families can interact with each other and make new friends with parents facing similar difficulties.

While RMHC is an independent charity, McDonald's Australia Limited plays a vital role by covering all administration and management costs ensuring every cent donated to RMHC can be spent on programs helping seriously ill children and their families.
